Registering A Baby

Congratulations on your new little miracle! At this exciting new time, you may be looking for information about the documents your new baby will need.

BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Although you fill out a form at the hospital, this is a form for Vital Statistics that records any births that occur. If you want to receive a copy of the birth certificate, come into the registries office where we can provide you with one. Either of the co-parents listed on the birth record can request the certificate with a Photo ID. Note that it can take up to 3-4 weeks for birth registration to appear on the database – and we cannot request a birth certificate until this has happened.

ALBERTA HEALTH CARD

At the hospital, you will receive a temporary Alberta Health Card. It will not say the baby’s actual name – instead it will say “Baby” and your last name. This card can be used until your actual card arrives. You will also be provided with a form at the hospital to fill out to add the baby to your Alberta Health account. If you fill this out and hand it in before you leave the hospital, the new Alberta Health Card will arrive in the mail a couple of weeks after you get home from the hospital. If you do not receive your card within 6 weeks, please call Alberta Health at 780-427-1432 or visit Registries so we can look into it for you.

SOCIAL INSURANCE CARD

Applications for the Social Insurance Card are now part of the birth registration forms at the hospital. Turnaround time is roughly around two weeks. If you have not received a Social Insurance Card in 15 business days, please call Service Canada at 1 800 206 7218
